The Location & Surrounds

This beautiful woodland is just off  ’Tea-Tree Lane’ in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.  Aptly named as it happens – as besides visiting your bird-house(s) you can relax and have a traditional cream or a champagne tea at the Beacon Country Pub and Eating House Breakfast, lunch and dinner are also served. The tea gardens have been on this site since 1818 when they were first established alongside the gardens and woodland.

The woodland and lakes are spread out below the Beacon and are a treat to explore.  The Beacon Hotel stands on a sandstone ridge at the north-western tip of a steep slope overlooking this wooded site with fine views south to what is known as Friezland Wood (referred to as the Beacon Woodland on this website) and east to Tunbridge Wells Common.

Within this lovely woodland there are three Lakes that are just packed with Carp, Perch, Trout and Bream (check this as it may change) – a real paradise for those who love fresh water fishing or equally exciting if you just wish for an afternoon’s bird-watching or just a walk (more of a trek!).  It currently costs just £5 for a whole day’s fishing (that’s about 8$USA or Canadian).  I’d like to say lunch could be sent down or bacon sandwiches (or a vege’ or even a Vegan roast!) are delivered on a bicycle but we haven’t worked that one out yet (or the webcam you would like to see installed)!  However, scrumptious food is awaiting you at the Beacon (a bit of a climb back but it’s all the more inviting when you return).

            

It’s such a nice spot – it’s a pity to leave – so why not dilly dally a while and stay at the Beacon (book early to avoid disappointment as there are just a few rooms!) and the following day you could visit one or more of the locations mentioned here (some of them seen on this page):

There’s such a lot to chat about here including the trees, birds, lakes, fish wildlife and all that is within the Tunbridge Wells surrounds. Shortly we will upload images of Sissinghurst, Lamberhurst, Wadhurst, Ticehurst, Scotney Castle and so forth.  If you have more time – Brighton, Lewes, Leeds Castle, Canterbury and London itself of course – are further afield but a must to visit.  Most are within the local vicinity.  However, you will probably have to visit Tunbridge Wells more than once – perhaps stay at the Beacon and make it a base for your sight seeing?
